For those who were burnt by the collapse of the business owned by A.C., if you had been given an inkling of the situation prior to the collapse :
a) Would you have moved your site no matter what the cost?
b) Did you have a backup copy of your site prior to this happening?
c) Did you have your FTP details prior to the collapse?
I am intrigued by the number of web designers that don't provide their clients with their FTP details to allow them to hold a backup copy of their site. It makes no business sense whatsoever to not hold a copy of your site (kind of like not having a spare set of keys to your bricks & mortar shop)- no matter how good your working relationship is with your IT people, you really have no idea what is going on behind the scenes so therefore you cannot guarantee the continuity of your site should something awful happen.
From the developers/designers point of view I understand they are keeping control of the FTP details so that the client doesnt take the site to another hosting company however I would have thought it would build more confidence in the client to give them a backup facility rather than have them constantly worrying about the safety of their site. Surely the better the service the more secure the customer and ultimately the less likely they are to want to move.
